Target Sports

Try something different. Learn a skill. See where it takes you.

Worthing Scout Target Sports gives young people across the District the opportunity to experience a range of exciting target activities, including air rifle, air pistol, crossbow, archery, tomahawk throwing and axe throwing.

Whether it is a young person’s first experience of a target sport, something different for a section programme, or the beginning of a journey towards serious competitive shooting, our experienced team is here to help.

Experience, equipment and expertise

Worthing is fortunate to have an exceptionally well-equipped and highly experienced Target Sports team.

Our facilities include a 12-lane multi-use range, together with an extensive range of specialist equipment including pre-charged air rifles, air pistols and break-barrel rifles.

But the team’s greatest resource is its people.

With experienced coaches and instructors able to support shooting to a high standard, young people who discover a particular talent or enthusiasm can develop their technique, build confidence and progress onto the wider shooting pathway.

That pathway can go a very long way. Shooters who started with Worthing Scouts have progressed to compete at national level, and the team can support young people who want to explore competitive shooting and national events.

Target shooting is also an Olympic sport — so that first Scout session really could be the beginning of something remarkable.

Great activities, run well and safely

For most young people, however, Target Sports is simply about having a fantastic Scout experience: trying something new, learning to concentrate, developing a skill and enjoying the satisfaction of seeing themselves improve.

We want those opportunities to be available throughout Scouting in Worthing.

Safety sits at the heart of everything the team does. Sessions are carefully organised, appropriately supervised and run with clear instruction and safety procedures, helping young people understand not just how to take part, but how to do so responsibly.

That applies whether they are learning to shoot a rifle, drawing a bow or throwing a tomahawk.

Young people are introduced to activities progressively, with the equipment, instruction and level of challenge appropriate to the session. Our aim is to create an environment where they can feel confident trying something unfamiliar while parents, carers and Scout volunteers can be confident that the activity is being run properly.

Learning to participate safely and responsibly is itself an important part of the experience.

Supporting sections and Scout volunteers

The Target Sports team is not just there for young people who want to become competitive shooters.

A major part of its role is helping Groups and sections across Worthing provide excellent target sports experiences locally.

The team can help with:

  • section Target Sports sessions and activity experiences
  • regular sessions for young people who want to develop their skills
  • coaching and progression onto the shooting pathway
  • Youth Proficiency Scheme (YPS) support and training
  • help with maintaining YPS records
  • club coach development
  • equipment maintenance
  • advice and support for volunteers running target sports locally

That means more sections can include target sports in their programmes, backed by the knowledge, equipment and experience available within the District.

Get involved with Target Sports

Whether you would like to arrange an activity for your section, develop your own skills, explore the shooting pathway, or would like some help providing target sports safely within your Group, the team would be very happy to hear from you.
