Whether you’re looking to give young people their first experience of climbing, add something adventurous to your section programme, or help them develop their skills and confidence, the Worthing Scouts Climbing Team can help.
Our experienced team supports sections from across Worthing with climbing at 3rd Worthing Scout HQ, on campsite climbing walls, and out on natural sandstone rock.
Climbing adventures in different environments
One of the great things about climbing is that no two experiences need to be quite the same.
The climbing wall at 3rd Worthing Scout HQ provides a great environment for young people to try climbing for the first time, learn the basics, practise their technique and build confidence.
The team can also take those skills further afield, supporting climbing at Scout campsites and on natural sandstone rock, giving young people the opportunity to experience climbing in very different surroundings.
Moving between different climbing environments introduces new challenges, develops new skills and gives young people the chance to discover just how much they are capable of.
Challenge, confidence and skills
Climbing is about much more than simply reaching the top.
It encourages young people to set themselves a challenge, solve problems, develop coordination, trust their equipment and the people around them, and keep trying when something initially seems difficult.
For one young person, success might mean reaching the top of a route. For someone else, it might be getting a little higher than they thought they could, learning a new technique, or simply having the confidence to give it a go.
The team aims to create an encouraging environment where everyone can take part at an appropriate level, develop their skills and enjoy that brilliant moment when they achieve something they weren’t sure they could do.
You can find out more about what young people can get from the activity on the Scouts climbing activity page.
Great activities, run well and safely
Adventure is an important part of Scouts, and managing that adventure properly is just as important.
Safety sits at the heart of the way our climbing activities are run. Sessions are carefully planned and appropriately supervised, with suitable equipment, appropriate safety systems and experienced volunteers providing clear instruction throughout.
Young people learn how climbing equipment is used, how to behave safely around a climbing area and why checks and good communication matter. The level of challenge is matched to the activity, location and experience of those taking part.
Activities are run in accordance with Scouts’ climbing and abseiling guidance, including the appropriate permissions, supervision, equipment, risk assessment and safety arrangements for the type of climbing being undertaken.
That means young people can concentrate on enjoying the challenge and pushing themselves a little further, while parents, carers and Scout volunteers can be confident that the activity is being managed properly.
Supporting sections across Worthing
A major part of the Climbing Team’s role is helping Groups and sections across Worthing put high-quality adventurous activities into their programmes.
The team can support:
- Climbing sessions at 3rd Worthing Scout HQ
- Climbing activities at Scout campsites
- Climbing on natural sandstone rock
- Introductory sessions for young people trying climbing for the first time
- Opportunities for young people to practise and develop their climbing skills
- Advice and support for section volunteers wanting to include climbing in their programme
Our aim is to make it easier for sections across Worthing to give young people the opportunity to experience climbing safely, enjoyably and with the support of people who know the activity well.
